Pregnancy and childbirth, even after an uncomplicated normal delivery , can result in injury. The pelvic floor muscles, the walls of the vagina and the perineum may be affected. Women may experience a range of distressing and uncomfortable symptoms. These symptoms may occur immediately or many years later. Symptoms such as urinary or faecal incontinence, feelings of pressure in the vagina, loss of sensation or pain with intercourse. Childbirth can leave the vagina and the perineum scarred, painful and unsightly. Many women are embarrassed to discuss these symptoms. However, it is important for women to be informed that the expertise is now available to restore function, confidence and comfort.
Dr.Agnew is a highly experienced Obstetrician, Urogynaecologist and Pelvic Floor Surgeon. There is a range of surgical solutions available that may restore your quality of life.
1. Surgical Treatment of Urinary Incontinence
There are different types of urinary incontinence. Common types are related to exercise (stress incontinence) and urgency (overactive bladder). Surgical correction may involve the injection of a bulking gel, natural slings or vaginal suspension procedures. It may involve the injection of Botox to the bladder. The treatment depends on the type and extent of urinary incontinence being experienced.
2. Anterior Vaginal Repair
Correction of a bladder that is prolapsing (descending). This prolapse causes vaginal pressure, urinary urgency and urinary infections.
3. Posterior Vaginal Repair
Correction of a bowel that is prolapsing (descending). This prolapse causes vaginal pressure, constipation, faecal incontinence and incomplete emptying of the bowel.
4.Vaginal Hysterectomy or Vaginal Vault Repair
Correction of a womb or upper vagina that is prolapsing (descending). These prolapses causes vaginal pressure and discomfort.
The perineum is the area between the vagina and the anus. This is the site of episiotomy and is often torn during childbirth. A perineoplasty removes scar tissue and reconstructs the vaginal entrance and perineum to restore appearance, comfort and function.
Excessively long labia on one, or both sides of the vagina can cause pain, discomfort or embarrassment during sexual activity and exercise. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reduce the size of the labia.
7. Vaginoplasty or Vaginal Rejuvenation
Procedures may be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis depending on the extent of surgery required. The first step would be making a consultation with Dr. Agnew to discuss your symptoms and expectations. Thankfully, it is no longer necessary for women to live with the consequences of these injuries.
