#idrecommends PRP

Also known as the “vampire facial,” platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been in use for years to help wounds heal faster by encouraging the growth of new tissue. When injected into the skin for cosmetic purposes, PRP helps to promote collagen production and kick-starts the skin’s regenerative capabilities. It’s a favourite treatment of patients and staff at the Institute and one we are really looking forward to post- Lockdown!

Below is everything you need to know about PRP.

What is it? ▫️Plasma is the liquid portion of our blood. Other than plasma, our blood contains small solids, including red cells, white cells and platelets. Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are best known for the important role they play in clotting blood. However, platelets also hold hundreds of proteins called growth factors that help with the healing of injuries. Platelet-rich plasma is plasma with a higher concentration of platelets, and therefore growth factors, than what is typically found in blood. The level of platelets in PRP can be 5 to 10 times greater than usual.

Once injected into the face, growth factors in the plasma increase collagen and elastin production, stem cell proliferation and vascular formation. This produces a plumping and tightening effect on the treated area. The skin is rejuvenated and hydrated and wrinkles are reduced, resulting in a healthy, regenerated, glowing complexion that looks smoother and more youthful.

Who is a suitable candidate? ▫️A patient who is concerned about ageing or sagging skin, dark circles around the eyes, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scarring, ageing hands or hairloss. It is also an ideal rejuvenating treatment for patients who are concerned about ageing skin but not yet ready or interested in anti-wrinkle injections or other injectables.

What results can I expect? ▫️Overall facial rejuvenation and glow – skin will be brighter and smoother, more toned and plump, where laxity and loss of volume may have been an issue. When used to promote hair growth, you can expect an increase in hair quality, volume, density and fullness, as well as strengthening existing hair.
Is there any downtime? ▫️It depends on the patient but allow 1-3 days for any redness or swelling to disappear. However, this is quite minimal and can be covered with makeup.
.
How long do results last? ▫️You will start to see results within weeks of your first treatment, however the optimal treatment number is 2-3 treatments depending on the indication. Results last 1 to 2 years depending on the patient and area treated.
.
How much is it? ▫️Prices start at €550

What patients say: ▫️‘PRP has worked wonders for the lines around my eyes - I have tried every treatment and nothing has made such a difference.’
