#AskID. in your opinion, what is the celebrity treatment keeping them all looking so naturally young?

The secret weapon common to celebrities who age in the most natural and youthful way is finding the right Board Certified Consultant Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon who fully understands the science and mechanics of ageing to guide them through this journey. There is no one magic treatment that achieves this in isolation. It is the combination of the best skin care regimens with skin rejuvenation and tightening techniques, anti-wrinkle injections and subtle but volume-restoring dermal fillers. Having a truly ideal aesthetic outcome involves using an individualised approach to reverse these changes in the face, restoring the aesthetically sought after ratios and dimensions of youth in the most natural way to restore a natural and more beautiful look.

Less is more when it comes to aesthetic treatments. The most common phrase I hear from my patients at initial cosmetic consultations is “I want to look better but I don’t want anyone to know I’ve had work done.” Effective, well-placed botox and dermal filler injections should be subtle and leave a patient looking fresher and more relaxed. The era of the frozen forehead and overfilled cheeks and nasolabial folds is gone.

There’s such a legacy of Botox causing a “frozen” and unnatural look in celebrities. There is no doubt that celebrities are still using Botox, but in a different way to previously. The concept of “Baby Botox” is to produce a much more natural look by using smaller amounts of Botox more regularly. I am a big proponent of using lesser amounts of Botox for its preventative action every 3-4 months. Botox should be subtle and stable. Patients should never lose the ability to make normal facial expressions.

As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat and other soft tissues with a resultant loss of facial volume and shifting of the fat pads beneath the surface of the skin. This leads to hollowing of the cheeks and temples, sagging of the skin, and our expression and smile lines become more apparent.

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have revolutionised non-surgical volume enhancement of the face, and can be used to improve many age-related changes. We use them to augment the cheeks and restore youthful fullness, fill out gauntness in the lower cheek or temple area, plump thin wrinkled lips, smooth out the vertical lines which appear around the edges of the lips, and to fill out hollows under the eye area (tear troughs). Even more popular with celebrities is the biostimulating pan-facial dermal filler Sculptra which enhances collagen production throughout the face to produce a more natural and subtle look.

Skin rejuvenation techniques are commonly used by celebrities to improve the texture and tone of their skin. Photo-rejuvenation with IPL is one of the most effective and simple treatments used to treat redness and broken veins, irregular pigmentation, and age spots. Fractionated lasers can considerably improve acne scarring, stretch marks and other forms of scarring, and improve skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, large pores and irregular pigmentation caused by sun damage and ageing. A combination of these two treatments, #Photofractional Rejuvenation” has become very popular with celebrities as it uses both these modalities simultaneously with minimal downtime.
Another rejuvenating procedure loved by celebrities, and made famous by the Khardashians, is PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy. PRP is extracted from the patient’s own blood and injected into the skin to promote collagen production and kick-starts the skin’s regenerative capabilities. Growth factors in the plasma increase collagen and elastin production, stem cell proliferation and vascular formation. This produces a plumping and tightening effect on the treated area. The skin is rejuvenated and rehydrated and wrinkles are reduced resulting in a healthy, regenerated glowing complexion that looks smoother and more youthful. It is used to treat a wide range of skin concerns, including ageing and sagging skin in the upper and lower eye area, dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and stretch marks and to improve skin texture and wrinkling over the neck, chest and hands.
For celebraties in their 40s and 50s, particularly in perimenopausal year, there can be a substantial decrease elasticity and collagen production with sagging of the skin particularly around the neck, jaweline and cheeks. Ultherapy is an FDA-approved, non-invasive, focused ultrasound treatment that stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin deep within the skin without disrupting the skin’s surface to lift skin of the upper and lower face, the neck, under the chin, the eyebrows and reduce wrinkles of the décolletage and chest. This is a favourite treatment of many celebrities including Jennifer Anniston and Christie Brinkely.

Finally, and possibly most important of all, is having a comprehensive but scientifcally driven anti-ageing skincare regimen including physical sunblock, Vitamin C, , antioxidants and growth factors and moisturising creams or serums with a high content of hyaluronic acid for that youthful glow!
