Dr Michéal O'Rourke
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
With over 15 years of work experience in ophthalmology, I am a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with specialist interest in oculoplastic, orbit and lacrimal disease. I hold public appointments at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital RVEEH- Ireland's largest ophthalmic hospital; St James' Hospital SJH- the largest academic hospital in Ireland and a European Cancer centre and Children's Health Ireland CHI at Crumlin where I established a dedicated specialist paediatric oculoplastic service. My private consulting rooms are located at Northbrook Eye Clinic in Ranelagh.
I attained my medical degree with honours from Trinity College, Dublin (MB BCh BAO BA) in 2007. My interest in ophthalmology was apparent in undergraduate years when I undertook an elective at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London inspiring a career in this highly specialised area of medicine. Upon securing a post within the Irish training scheme, I attained the highest grade in the MRCSI(Ophthalmology) examinations in my year. In the same year, I was also successful in the Fellowship of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) examinations in Paris. I subsequently ranked first in the National Ophthalmic Surgery Specialist Training Scheme in 2015. Upon completion, I was awarded my certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) in 2019 indicating proficiency in all areas of ophthalmic medicine and surgery and subsequently enrolled as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. During this period, I advocated for fellow trainees through representation on numerous boards and committees including the Irish College of Ophthalmology Education & Training Committee, the Irish Surgical Training Group, a consultative panel with the Irish Medical Council and the Forum of Irish Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies.
In 2015, I was awarded a PhD following full time clinical and translational academic research in ocular immunology at University College, Dublin and Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, TCD. This body of work was presented at national and international conferences being duly recognised with numerous prizes, awards, and publications. I have also completed a post-graduate diploma in statistics (PG Dip Stat (TCD)), which enables me to apply rigorous data analysis and evidence-based practice to my work. My academic interest continues as I continue to publish and collaborate with international experts, as well as academic reviewing in all major ophthalmology journals. I was appointed director and board member of the charitable Research Foundation, RVEEH which supports research through educational grants. I am Senior Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology at TCD and was selected for the European Leadership Development Programme (EuLDP) in Ophthalmology in 2023. This pan- European programme identifies future leaders in ophthalmology and provides leadership skills adapted to the specialty while harmonising training and health policy legislation in Europe by fostering global peer networks. I have also completed a certificate in Healthcare Management with UCD Smurfit Business School.
While my training affords me a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of ophthalmology, I have developed a special interest in CATARACT SURGERY with training at the Vision Experience Centre, Barcelona. I bench mark refractive outcomes through the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (EUREQUO). My sub-specialist interest is ORBIT, LACRIMAL & OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY developing proficiency while on two international prestigious fellowships in Manchester, UK and Melbourne, Australia. I have a particular interest in thyroid eye disease, facial palsy, peri-ocular cancers, surgical correction of eyelid malpositions and paediatric oculoplastics. This is supplemented with further training in aesthetics (botox, filler and aesthetic surgery) at the Jules Stein Institute, University of California (UCLA), USA.
