#IDInFocus : EltaMD Clear

As Consultant Dermatologists, we always recommend a physical sunscreen over a chemical sunscreen where possible.  Having said that, we are happiest when our patients are wearing any SPF 30+ formulation to protect their skin!

In terms of how sunscreens work, chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin and then absorb UV rays, converting those rays into heat and releasing them from the body.  Physical sunblock, in contrast, sits on top of the skin as a barrier and reflects the sun’s rays.

Historically, people tended to avoid zinc-based, physical sunscreens as they were thick and sticky, like Sudocrem, and more suited to protecting the faces of Australian surfers.  But there have been significant scientific advances in physical sunscreen formulations in the past ten years and @eltamdskincare is one of our absolute favourites ranges, which is why we are the only skincare experts stocking the brand in Ireland right now.

As well as being the number one ranking dermatologist-recommended sunscreen brand in the US, EltaMD is also a celebrity favourite with Drew Barrymore, Ashley Graham and Kendall Jenner amongst its fans.

ELta MD’s UV Clear SPF 46, above, is a lightweight, oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free, noncomedogenic physical sunscreen. It helps to calm and protect sensitive skin types prone to discolouration and breakouts associated with acne and rosacea. It is our single most popular product at the Institute.

Made with 9% zinc oxide, which protects skin from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, the formula also includes texture and tone-smoothing niacinamide (Vitamin B3) to calm and protect acne-prone skin, the anti-oxidant Vitamin E, as well as hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and lactic acid to gently exfoliate.

It’s a very lightweight and silky formula, immediately absorbed by the skin and leaving no residue, meaning it can be worn either alone or under makeup. There’s also a tinted version for those who want sheer coverage.
