Introducing Dr. Benvon Moran

Dr. Benvon Moran

Dr Benvon Moran, who recently returned to Dublin and joined the team at the Institute, is a Consultant Dermatologist, Dermatologic and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon, specialising in all aspects of skin cancer screening, diagnosis and management, alongside her procedural and cosmetic dermatology expertise.
Dr. Moran graduated from University College Cork in 2004 with honours, and completed the Dermatology Specialist training scheme in 2014. She completed an American College of Mohs Surgery Fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery, advanced dermatologic surgery and cutaneous oncology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She went on to setup the first Mohs Surgery service in Southeastern Ontario, at Queen’s University Canada, where she practiced for five years as an Assistant Professor of Dermatology.

As Dr Moran has published and presented internationally on Mohs Surgery and skin cancer, we asked her what drew her to this area of dermatology specifically?

“As soon as I started my Dermatology training I knew I wanted to specialise in dermatologic surgery and Mohs micrographic surgery. Mohs surgery is a type of surgery carried out under local anaesthetic that allows for complete margin control – that is 100% of the surgical margin is examined at the time of surgery to ensure complete clearance with maximum sparing of normal skin. This is very important on cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas, such as the face.”

In terms of preventing skin cancer, Dr Moran says: “ I advise all my patients to protect themselves from the sun – this means covering up as much as possible with clothing and a hat, and using SPF50 on exposed skin – 365 days a year! It’s also important to check your own skin every month or so to look for any new or changing lesions that might require medical attention. Prevention is key, and early detection of skin cancer can save your life and avoid the need for extensive surgery.”

As well as the Institute of Dermatologists, Dr Moran is also working at St. James’s Hospital, Hermitage Medical Clinic and Blackrock Clinic.
