Building a Rosacea-Safe Skincare Routine
If you have rosacea, building a skincare routine can feel complicated. Products that work well for most people can trigger a flare. And with a lot of conflicting advice online, it is hard to know where to start.
The good news is that a simple, consistent routine using the right products makes a real difference. Getting the basics right — a gentle cleanser, good barrier support, and daily sun protection — can help calm the skin, reduce redness, and prevent further damage.
This guide sets out a morning and evening routine for rosacea-prone skin, with products recommended by the dermatologists at the Institute of Dermatologists.

Why the Right Routine Matters
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition. It causes persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and in some cases inflammatory papules and pustules. It also affects the skin barrier, making the skin more reactive to environmental triggers, skincare ingredients, and lifestyle factors.
Using the wrong products can disrupt the skin barrier further, increase inflammation, and worsen redness and sensitivity.
A rosacea-safe routine focuses on four things:
-
Gentle cleansing that does not strip the skin
-
Barrier repair to reduce reactivity
-
Avoiding known irritants such as fragrance, alcohol, and harsh acids
-
Daily mineral sun protection — one of the most important steps for rosacea-prone skin
If your rosacea is inflammatory or has not improved with skincare changes, a consultation with a dermatologist is important. Prescription treatments are often needed alongside a good skincare routine.
Morning Routine for Rosacea-Prone Skin
Keep the morning routine simple. The goal is a gentle cleanse, barrier support, and a reliable mineral sunscreen.
Step 1: Gentle Cleanse
Start with the EltaMD Oil-in-Gel Cleanser. This is a low-lather formula that removes makeup, sunscreen, and impurities without stripping the skin. It is suitable for rosacea-prone and sensitive skin types.
Use lukewarm water rather than hot water, which can trigger flushing. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.
Step 2: Balance and Prepare
Apply the EltaMD Skin Recovery Toner to damp skin. This toner helps to calm and balance the skin without the alcohol or acids that can worsen rosacea. It supports the skin barrier before moisturiser and sunscreen.
If your skin is very reactive, introduce this step gradually rather than using it every day from the start.
Step 3: Mineral Sun Protection
Sunscreen is the most important step in a rosacea routine. UV exposure is one of the most common rosacea triggers. Daily sun protection helps prevent flares, reduce redness over time, and protect the skin from further damage.
Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide are much better tolerated by rosacea-prone skin than chemical filters, which can cause stinging and irritation.
We recommend two options depending on your preference:
EltaMD UV Clear Tinted SPF 46
The tinted version contains niacinamide, which has anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm redness. The tint provides a subtle evening of skin tone, making it suitable for everyday wear. It is lightweight, non-comedogenic, and sits well under or instead of makeup.
This is a good option if visible redness is a concern and you want some coverage alongside sun protection.
EltaMD UV Clear Untinted SPF 46
The untinted version contains the same key ingredients — zinc oxide, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid — without the tint. A good option if you prefer a clear finish or plan to wear foundation on top.
EltaMD UV Clear is one of the most frequently recommended sunscreens by the dermatologists at the Institute of Dermatologists, particularly for patients with rosacea and acne-prone skin.

Evening Routine for Rosacea-Prone Skin
The evening routine is when the skin does its repair. The priority is thorough but gentle cleansing, followed by barrier restoration and hydration.
Step 1: Double Cleanse
Begin with the EltaMD Oil-in-Gel Cleanser to dissolve sunscreen and makeup. Follow with a second gentle cleanse to fully clean the skin.
Double cleansing is safe for rosacea-prone skin as long as you use a gentle, non-stripping formula. Avoid anything foaming, gel-based, or containing fragrance.
Step 2: Restore the Skin Barrier
Apply the EltaMD Barrier Renewal Complex. This moisturiser contains ceramides, squalane, glycerin, and niacinamide. These ingredients work together to support the skin barrier, reduce water loss, and calm redness and inflammation.
A compromised skin barrier is one of the key drivers of sensitivity and reactivity in rosacea. Regular use of a ceramide-based moisturiser helps to repair and maintain the barrier over time.
This product is non-comedogenic and fragrance-free, making it suitable for rosacea, sensitive skin, and post-procedure skin.
Step 3: Overnight Hydration
Finish with the EltaMD PM Restore Moisturiser. This is a rich but non-comedogenic formula designed for overnight skin recovery. It contains peptides and lipids to support skin renewal, and is formulated without fragrance or known irritants.
For very dry or sensitised rosacea skin, layering this on top of the Barrier Renewal Complex provides extra hydration and overnight repair.

What to Avoid if You Have Rosacea
Knowing what to leave out of a routine is as important as knowing what to include. Common ingredients that frequently trigger rosacea flares include:
-
Alcohol-based toners and astringents
-
Fragrance and essential oils
-
Menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor
-
High-concentration acids used too frequently
-
Physical scrubs and exfoliants
-
Chemical sunscreen filters such as oxybenzone and avobenzone
-
High-strength retinoids introduced without adequate barrier support
If you are unsure whether a product is suitable for rosacea-prone skin, a skincare consultation with one of our dermatologists can help you build a routine tailored to your skin.
