How to Treat Acne Scarring: In-Clinic Options Explained

how to treat acne scarring

Acne scarring can feel especially frustrating because it often becomes more noticeable once the breakouts themselves have settled. The good news is that scarring responds well to treatment, provided it is approached correctly. For Acne Awareness Month, Consultant Dermatologist and co-founder of the Institute of Dermatologists, Professor Caitriona Ryan, explains the options.

The short answer: acne must be fully inactive before scar treatment begins, otherwise the scarring process continues. Superficial scarring responds well to microneedling, while moderate to deep scarring is best treated with radiofrequency microneedling and laser, often in combination. The right approach depends on your skin and scar type.

Why does timing matter before treating scars?

Before starting any scar treatment, it is essential that your acne is completely inactive. If acne is still ongoing, the scarring process will continue and undermine the results. This is the single most important principle in treating acne scars.

Why do acne scars behave differently to active acne?

Active acne is an inflammatory process. Scarring is a structural change in the skin left behind once that inflammation resolves. Because the two are different problems, they need different approaches, and products that help active breakouts will not remodel established scar tissue. This is where in-clinic treatments come in.

What treatments are available for acne scarring?

The Institute of Dermatologists offers a range of advanced options, tailored to scar type and severity.

skin pen for acne scarring

SkinPen Microneedling. SkinPen is the world's first FDA-approved microneedling device, clinically proven to treat facial acne scars. It works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body's natural healing response and prompting new collagen and elastin production. It is effective for superficial scarring, suitable for all skin types and tones, and involves minimal downtime. Treatments are typically done every four weeks, with a course of four to six sessions recommended.

Secret pro before and after for acne scarring

Secret PRO. This is the clinic's combination treatment for moderate to deep scarring, bringing together two clinically proven technologies in one device. Fractional CO2 laser resurfaces the outer layers of the skin, while radiofrequency microneedling delivers energy deep into the dermis to stimulate collagen, elastin and new blood vessel formation. Treating both the surface and the deeper layers gives a more comprehensive result for deeper, textured scarring such as pebble-stone scars. It is suitable for all ages and skin tones, and can be combined with other therapies.

Chemical peel at Institute of Dermatologists

Chemical peels. Peels apply a solution that exfoliates the upper layers of the skin, encouraging new skin cell growth. They range from superficial peels for mild scarring to deeper peels for more significant scars.

PRP therapy. Platelet-rich plasma uses a small sample of your own blood, processed to concentrate the platelets, which are then used alongside a treatment such as microneedling. The growth factors in PRP support healing and tissue regeneration, and studies show that combining PRP with microneedling can lead to less visible scarring.

What about retinoids?

Retinoids support scar remodelling over time, helping to fade discolouration and improve overall texture. They work best as part of a consistent routine and alongside in-clinic treatment rather than on their own.

How do I know which treatment is right for me?

Scar type, depth and skin tone all influence the best approach, and most patients do best with a personalised plan, sometimes combining treatments. The starting point is a procedure consultation, where the team assesses your skin and recommends the right course.

Frequently asked questions

Can acne scars be treated while I still have active acne?

No. Acne must be fully inactive first, otherwise new scarring will continue to form.

How many sessions will I need?

Most treatments work best as a course of four to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, depending on the treatment and your skin.

Is there much downtime?

Microneedling involves minimal downtime, usually a day or two of redness. Laser and Secret PRO downtime varies with intensity and is discussed as part of your plan.

Will one treatment remove my scars completely?

Scar treatment improves the appearance of scarring significantly, but realistic expectations matter. A personalised plan gives the best outcome.
