Self-Tan vs Sunbeds: Why Dermatologists Choose Self-Tan Every Time
May is Melanoma Awareness Month. At the Institute of Dermatologists, it is one of the most important dates in our calendar. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, and UV exposure — whether from the sun or from sunbeds — is the leading preventable cause.
This May, we want to talk about something practical and positive: how to get a glow safely, and why self-tan is the choice that dermatologists stand behind. It is also why we are proud to be launching Bare by Vogue at the Institute — created by Vogue Williams and developed with skin-loving ingredients, it is the self-tan range that both Professors Caitriona Ryan and Niki Ralph use themselves.
Why Is UV Exposure So Dangerous for Skin?
UV radiation damages the DNA in skin cells. Over time, that damage accumulates and can lead to skin cancer, including melanoma. This is not about occasional sun exposure — it is about repeated, unprotected exposure, and particularly about sunbeds, which emit concentrated UV radiation and carry a well-documented risk of melanoma.
There is no such thing as a safe tan from UV. A tan is the skin’s response to DNA damage. It is a sign that harm has already occurred.
Self-tan products work completely differently. They use an active ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with amino acids in the top layer of skin to create a temporary bronzed colour. No UV involved. No DNA damage. No increased skin cancer risk.
What Does a Dermatologist Actually Use?
“As a dermatologist, I see every day what years of UV exposure can do to skin — and it is not just about cancer risk. It accelerates ageing, breaks down collagen, and causes the kind of pigmentation damage that is very hard to reverse. Self-tan has come a long way. Bare by Vogue gives a genuinely beautiful, natural-looking result without any of the risk. It is what I use personally, and it is what I recommend. My favourite products are the Medium Clear Tan Foam and the Light-Medium Face Tanning Drops.”
Why Is Bare by Vogue Different from Other Self-Tans?
There are a lot of self-tan products on the market. Bare by Vogue stands out because it was formulated with skin health at the centre — not just the colour result. Every product in the range is:
- Vegan and cruelty-free
- Pregnancy safe
- Enriched with skin-loving ingredients: Peptides, Glycerin, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Goji Berry, Pomegranate Extract, Aloe Vera, and Chamomile
- Designed for a streak-free, natural-looking finish that fades evenly
The brand was built on a simple idea: that getting a glow should be easy, predictable, and good for your skin. Having become one of the best-selling self-tan brands in Ireland, it has clearly resonated.

Which Bare by Vogue Products Are Available at the Institute?
We have curated a focused range for our clinic and online store, centred on the two products Professor Ryan uses and recommends.
Clear Tan Foam (Medium and Dark)
This is the hero product. A lightweight, quick-drying formula that delivers a smooth, transfer-resistant finish. It is clear on application, so you apply it with confidence and let it develop over time. The formula includes Goji Berry and Pomegranate Extract to brighten and protect, Aloe Vera and Chamomile to soothe, and Vitamin B5 to lock in moisture.
Tan Drops for Face (Light/Medium and Medium/Dark)
Facial skin is more delicate and needs a different approach. These drops are designed specifically for the face, allowing you to mix a few drops into your moisturiser and build your glow gradually. This gives you complete control over the depth of colour and makes it ideal for anyone new to self-tan.
Complete Your Routine
We also stock the supporting essentials to get the most from your tan:
- Exfoliating Mitt (€9) — prep skin before application
- Tanning Mitt (€9) — streak-free, even application
- Eraser Express Tan Removal Gel (€20) — remove build-up cleanly before your next application
How Do You Get the Best Result from Self-Tan?
Preparation makes the difference between a good tan and a great one.
- Exfoliate skin 24 hours before application to remove dead skin cells
- Moisturise dry areas such as elbows, knees, and ankles before applying
- Apply using your tanning mitt in long, sweeping motions
- Allow 48 hours to develop, then shower gently to reveal the colour
- Moisturise daily and avoid harsh exfoliants to extend the life of your tan
What Products Can I Use for Exfoliation & Moisturisation?
We recommend Sorato UR30 Exfoliating & Moisturising Cream and Sorato EU10 Intensive Moisturising Cream to prep and maintain your skin around self-tan application.
Does Self-Tan Provide Any Sun Protection?
No. This is an important point. Self-tan creates the appearance of a tan but provides no UV protection whatsoever. You still need to apply SPF every day, regardless of whether you are wearing self-tan. During Skin Cancer Awareness Month, this message matters.
If you need guidance on the right SPF for your skin type, our team is here to help.
