A traditional emollient for dry skin, in the shower and out
When the weather turns cold and the central heating goes on, skin loses moisture faster and soap can leave it feeling tight and itchy. Elave Silcock's Base is a classic high lipid cream that does two jobs: use it in place of soap to cleanse without stripping the skin, then apply it as a moisturiser to help hold water in.
- For dry, flaky and itchy skin on the face and body
- Suitable for eczema and dermatitis prone skin
- Free from fragrance and colours
- Suitable from newborn and during pregnancy
Why a soap substitute matters
Ordinary soap removes the natural oils that hold the skin barrier together. For anyone with dry skin, eczema or a compromised barrier, swapping soap for an emollient is one of the simplest changes that makes a difference, especially through autumn and winter.
Silcock's Base is a high lipid cream, so it leaves a light protective layer on the skin that helps reduce the rate at which moisture evaporates.
How to use
As a soap substitute: massage onto wet skin, then rinse off with lukewarm water or a soft flannel. Pat skin dry.
As a moisturiser: apply to clean, dry skin as often as needed.
For best results, keep showers and baths short and lukewarm, and moisturise within a few minutes of towel drying while the skin is still slightly damp.

Frequently asked questions
What is Silcock's Base?
Silcock's Base is a traditional emollient cream used for dry skin. It works as both a moisturiser and a soap substitute.
Can I use it instead of aqueous cream?
Yes. It is a similar type of emollient cream and can be used in the same way, in place of soap in the shower or bath, and as a moisturiser for dry skin.
Is it suitable for babies and children?
Yes. Elave Silcock's Base is suitable from newborn onwards, which makes it a practical choice for families, especially through the winter months.
Can I use it on my face?
Yes. It can be used on both the face and the body.
Is it suitable for eczema?
It is suitable for eczema and dermatitis prone skin as a soap substitute and moisturiser. If your skin is very reactive or broken, patch test first. For very dry patches that need a richer barrier, Elave Intensive Ointment is a good companion.
How often can I use it?
As often as needed. It is gentle enough for frequent daily use.
